Colleen Hanabusa’s Statement Regarding Major Endorsement by HGEA

Reaffirming her commitment as a champion of the rights of working families, Congresswoman Colleen Hanabusa on June 12 released the following statement regarding the endorsement of her gubernatorial campaign by Hawai‘i’s largest public-sector labor union, the Hawai‘i Government Employees Association (HGEA), AFSCME Local 152, AFL-CIO:

“On behalf of our campaign and supporters, I extend my heartfelt thanks and appreciation to the more than 43,000 members of HGEA, which has placed its trust in me and our campaign to build a better future for Hawai‘i’s families.

“The Hawai‘i we know and love was built by labor. The professional opportunities and protections guaranteed by our unions have helped our families grow and thrive in one of the most expensive places to live in the world. Equality and fairness in the workplace is vital to ensuring the same values are championed in every facet of our communities.

“We cannot take these protections for granted. The U.S. Supreme Court is currently considering a case, Janus v. AFSCME, that will have serious and wide-ranging implications for labor. Now, more than ever, we need strong, decisive leadership and experience managing the issues and policies that impact Hawai‘i’s families.

“Throughout my career, as an attorney and elected official, my mission has always been to create a community where workers can raise their families and provide a brighter future for their children. I will continue to fight for the protection of policies and initiatives that level the playing field, ensure a livable wage, and strengthen employment protections for all of Hawai‘i’s workers, protect public sector jobs, workplace safety, pension and health benefits, collective bargaining and the economic security of the middle class.

“Together, we will ensure that Hawai‘i’s future includes all of us, not just a privileged few.”
